Photos showing a workman carrying out essential repairs on top of the 247ft spire have been published, highlighting the complexity of the task.
Dan Bottomley from SSHConservation’s rope access team can be seen working on the 500-year-old spire at Wakefield Cathedral.
Works costing £44,900 are designed to restore the crumbling 15th Century spire, a site that can be seen for miles around.
Historic England has provided the repair scheme with £35,920, and appealed for further donations to the scheme.
Commenting on the works Dean of Wakefield, Simon Cowling said “Not since the mid-nineteenth century has the spire needed such repair work to be carried out in order to secure its future.”
