A Powerful Alliance for Change
In a room filled with cross-party support, ambition, and shared purpose, Chamber UK and 50:50 Parliament hosted a memorable International Women’s Day celebration at Speaker’s House. Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Health and Care, Helen Morgan brought both warmth and conviction to the evening – urging women to see themselves as leaders and future MPs.
“It’s brilliant to be celebrating International Women’s Day, not only with parliamentary colleagues but also with such inspiring candidates and MPs of the future.”

Elected via a by-election in 2021, Morgan became the first woman ever to represent North Shropshire – a milestone that speaks volumes about how long the road to gender equality has been.
Spotlight on Carers and Hidden Responsibilities
Now a key voice in her party on health and care, Morgan used her speech to shine a light on the often invisible – yet essential – role of carers, the vast majority of whom are women. Whether paid or unpaid, these women hold communities together, often at great personal and financial cost.
She told the crowd, “Many caring roles in our communities are carried out by women. Whether they’re looking after children, elderly relatives or other loved ones, these responsibilities add significant challenges to their daily lives and careers.”
She called for proper pay, support, and visibility for carers – including career progression for paid care workers and practical support such as leave and respite for unpaid carers.
Celebrating Milestones – and Recognising the Road Ahead
Morgan noted the positive shift in women’s representation in recent years, with the number of women ever elected to Parliament now passing 650 – but she was also clear that the job is far from done.
“Let’s be honest – there’s still a really long way to go.”

She encouraged everyone in the room to reflect on what they could offer, and to take that first step toward candidacy, even if it feels intimidating.
“It isn’t as scary as some might have you believe. Yes, someone might criticise your jacket – but someone else will almost certainly compliment your shoes! It balances out”, Morgan said.
Supporting Candidates and Championing Lived Experience
Morgan’s message was simple and powerful, “We need more women in Parliament who understand the lived realities of those they represent – particularly those, like carers, whose voices often go unheard.
“We need people who reflect their communities and ensure all voices are heard – whatever people are doing in their everyday lives”, Morgan said.
She explained, “Now, as the Liberal Democrat Health and Care spokesperson, something that has really struck me over the past few months is just how many caring roles in our communities are carried out by women. Whether they’re looking after children, elderly relatives or other loved ones, these responsibilities add significant challenges to their daily lives and careers.”
Her rallying cry was clear: “don’t wait. Stand. Join us. We’d love to have you.”
