Standing Strong: The Fight for LGBTQ+ Rights in the Face of Global Backlash

As global LGBTQ+ rights face growing threats, UK parliamentarians, activists, and international leaders gathered to discuss the urgent need for advocacy and solidarity. This event, hosted by the British Group Inter-Parliamentary Union, shed light on rising discrimination, policy setbacks, and the role the UK can play in championing human rights worldwide.

A Call to Action in the Heart of Westminster

Gathered in Parliament, policymakers and human rights defenders stood united in their commitment to defending LGBTQ+ rights in an era of mounting hostility. The event, led by the British Group Inter-Parliamentary Union, featured impassioned speeches on the erosion of freedoms, the rise of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation worldwide, and the UK’s responsibility to lead by example.

“Our collective efforts can and will continue to make a difference.”

The discussion kicked off with a stark reminder that, despite decades of progress, LGBTQ+ communities still face threats that require vigilance and advocacy. One parliamentarian, reflecting on their own journey, highlighted that even in the UK, hostility persists, particularly on social media, where harmful narratives are perpetuated.

Global Perspectives: The Frontline of the Struggle

Richard Byle from the Elton John AIDS Foundation provided a sobering assessment of the impact of recent cuts to global HIV programmes. He emphasised that autocracy is creeping into democratic spaces, undermining not just LGBTQ+ rights but human rights as a whole.

“Democracy isn’t just a set of rules and institutions; it’s an ever-evolving idea that must grow to meet societal challenges. Right now, it’s struggling.”

Dr. Frank Mugisha, Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda, provided a powerful testimony on the dangers LGBTQ+ individuals face in Uganda, where anti-gay laws have led to persecution, violence, and the need for international intervention.

“We warned that rights taken for granted in the West would start to be taken away. We are now seeing that happen before our eyes.” – Dr. Frank Mugisha

Mugisha detailed the influence of right-wing evangelical movements in Africa, outlining how these groups fund and promote regressive policies that undo years of progress. He called for greater diplomatic engagement and financial support for grassroots organisations working to protect LGBTQ+ people on the ground.

The Role of the UK: Leading with Diplomacy and Action

Speakers urged the UK government to take definitive action, including:

  • Strengthening diplomatic pressure on countries rolling back LGBTQ+ rights.
  • Sustaining funding for global human rights initiatives, particularly in the face of reduced support from the US.
  • Ensuring businesses and international institutions advocate for inclusive policies.
  • Mobilising cross-party support to keep LGBTQ+ rights at the forefront of the UK’s international agenda.

Kate Ferguson, Co-Executive Director of Protection Approaches, reinforced the urgency of recognising these attacks as part of a broader pattern of identity-based violence.

“When one group is attacked, none of us are safe. These moments of real terror in the human rights sphere are connected. We must stand together and leave no one behind.” – Kate Ferguson

Final Thought: A Call for Solidarity

As the event concluded, speakers emphasised that while the challenges ahead are formidable, the resilience and unity of the LGBTQ+ movement remain powerful forces for change. The UK, with its long history of championing human rights, must step up to provide leadership, resources, and unwavering support to those facing persecution worldwide.

“We are strong, we are committed, and of course, we are fabulous.” – Richard Byle

As discussions continue in Parliament and beyond, one message remains clear: silence is not an option. Advocacy, diplomacy, and solidarity will be key to ensuring that LGBTQ+ rights are not just preserved but strengthened in the years to come.
